Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is a common condition that can usually be helped with Chinese herbs.
PMS occurs seven to ten days before menstruation and disappears shortly after menstrual bleeding has begun. According to modern and western evidence, it is about fluctuations of hormonal balance of estrogen and progesterone. Symptoms include nervousness, irritability, mood swings, depression, fluid retention and breast tenderness.
From a traditional Eastern viewpoint these problems relate to “stagnation of liver qi”. Because the “liver’s qi” preserve blood and regulate the free flow of qi, it is almost always the liver organ that is involved in imbalances related to menstruation. When “liver qi” is flowing freely the menstrual cycle is also even and harmonious.
The dietary supplement Harmony, is formulated in Sweden and is based on the classic formula “Xiao Yao Tang” that is ingested daily until menstruation. Then one stops with the product until the menstrual period is over. This schedule is followed for three to four months, and then you make a break for a month. If the “free flow of liver qi” is restored and menstruation is even there is no need to continue. If your period would continue to be uneven, you can then continue for three to four months. Many women have been helped by these herbs worldwide, including many in Sweden.
The herbal mixture originates from “Shiwen Chen”, et al, 1080. A tradition that means that it has and is still used by many women -for many centuries. PMS is considered a common condition and not a disease. Men may also have a stagnation of liver qi. Men experience when nervousness and irritability, and can be helped by the same herbal combination. In classic Chinese medicine it is always about restoring inner balance – of body and mind.
